For centuries the badger (Meles melee) was protected in Britain, until it received legal protection in 1973.

Now it is being targeted again — by the Government.

Up to 100,000 badgers could be slaughtered in a policy repeatedly criticised by animal disease scientists.

Dominic Dyer, chief executive of the Badger Trust, reveals the origins of the badger cull in political ambition and big business.

Dominic Dyer is a wildlife protection campaigner, writer and broadcaster. After working as a civil servant in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, he joined the Food and Drink Federation as an expert on food and the environment, and, later,  the Crop Protection Association, where he was chief executive. In 2012, he abandoned his career as an industry lobbyist and became a full-time wildlife protection campaigner with Care for the Wild. Today he is policy advisor for the Born Free Foundation and chief executive of the Badger Trust. The views he expresses in Badgered to Death are his own and not those of any organisation.
